Speaking about the arrest of the Russian businessman Levon Hayrapetyan, in an interview to “ArmNews”, the President of Armenia, Serzh Sargisyan stated that during the bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin they also discussed that issue. According to him, “the Russian President promised to study the problem; he was unaware of the criminal case and did not recognize Levon Hayrapetyan, at least, by his name”.
Aravot.am asked the Chairman of Free Democrats Party, MP Khachatur Kokobelyan whether he considers likely that Putin doesn’t know Levon Hayrapetyan even though Mr. Hayrapetyan is a quite popular and a successful businessman throughout Russia. Mr. Kokobelyan replied: “Based on the reaction both from the international media and the local press, as well as from various statements, it becomes clear that there isn’t more or less an observant person in the region who does not know Levon Hayrapetyan. In this sense, of course, it is extremely doubtful: How could Putin not know Levon Hayrapetyan? And this clearly emphasizes the absence of sincere relations in that format.
In the same interview, Serzh Sargsyan called on the opposition to show restraint in their criticism towards the authorities in such a tense situation. According to him “when the number of conflicts on the borders increases, it’s not good to inspire the enemy.” When asked how this call is acceptable for you, Mr. Kokobelyan replied: “There is an obvious reality. We live in the XXI century, and everybody understands everything – both the good and the bad, and firstly the Armenian authorities are responsible for the weakening of Armenia. Opposition, even with a strong desire, could not cause so much damage to the strength of our country (the basis of state) and our economy. It’s a simple fact that today’s economic and political situation in Armenia does not contribute to the efficiency of the army. Any politician, whether s/he is a representative of the government or the opposition, should feel her/himself responsible. However, the government officials, including the president and the simple officials, should realize that they are firstly responsible for the current situation in Armenia.
